Be Prepared to Capture Your Next Big Idea

Great ideas don’t always come to us at great times.

You could find yourself in line at the grocery store, driving in your car, or just about to fall asleep….when…BOOM…it hits you like a ton of bricks…the solution to that problem you’ve been struggling with for the last several weeks.

That’s good. You’ve figured it out.  But will you REMEMBER it?  You’re busy! You’ve got a lot on your plate. It might seem that this new idea is SO obvious, there’s no way you could forget it.  But how many times have you thought of a to do item only to have it slip your mind moments later?

Here is my suggestion.  Keep a notebook or a pad of paper specifically designated for your “Great Ideas”. Keep it with you. Carry it to the grocery store with you. Put it on your bedside table before you go to bed.  Keep it in the car, but don’t write while you’re driving! Wait until you can pull over.

If you’re not a pen and paper person, use a note app on your phone.  Or send yourself an email. (Back in the day I used to call my home phone and leave messages for myself on my answering machine.) You could also use a voice memo app on your phone.  No writing or texting necessary.

The important thing is to stay organized. How many times have you jotted something down on a piece of scrap paper only to lose it, forget where you put it, or accidentally thrown it away? Keeping a dedicated notebook will solve that problem.

The next thing to do is set aside time to review your ideas. Expand on them. Let them grow.  Do this on a regular basis, and your brain will start to get in the habit of “it’s Tuesday at 7:30 pm…time to start pumping out some great ideas!”
